My new Hi2Lo Earring design is like today’s popular trend of conversion earrings. Most conversion earrings involve removing or adding a piece to change the earring. My Hi2Lo Earrings allows you to change the earring by simply adjusting it. No extra pieces needed to give the same pair of earrings a completely fresh look. Hi2Lo simply means you can wear the earring high which will resemble a hoop or oval shape earring or wear it hanging low, like a dangle. Earrings can be made with a stud hook or wire hook. Ornaments that are used are beads, semi-precious & natural stones, crystals, pearls, gold, silver etc. Price will vary depending on materials used.

LEAP OF FAITH, COVID-19, AND A $1,200 CHECK
A STORY OF DETERMINATION
My name is C. Elaine Estes. I am owner and founder of CEE MY JEWELRY (formerly Upgrade Your Badge). My company is based in Oxford, NC. At 58 years old and working for others all my life, I decided that I had the knowledge and drive to become my own boss. During the Covid-19 Pandemic, I asked myself what skill I possessed to become self-employed. I am a poet by nature and have published a book of poetry. My goal was to publish more and maybe even write short stories. Unfortunately, this goal was put on hold. At the age of seven years old, my mother died as a result of domestic violence. The assailant was my father. I’ve lost numerous relatives to domestic violence. Thus, I became an advocator against domestic violence and have participated in several domestic violence events in North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia.
At age 50, I entered Community College to pursue an Associate Degree in Arts and to possibly further my education even more. Due to financial obligation, I was unable to finish getting an Associate Degree. This goal too was placed on hold. I started to feel like a failure after being unable to obtain my life goals especially at the age of 58. I am a manager at a local beauty supply store. The owners are pleasant. My customers are the best in the world, but I feel like something is missing from my life. Although my life is pleasant and I’m so blessed compared to so many others, I have an inside desire to fill. It is time to become my own boss so I can help others.
One day I was talking to my wonderful mother-figure and 92-year-old neighbor, Mrs. Edna Frazier and after complaining about my job, she asked me” Well Carol, what are you good at doing beside writing poetry? Can you make anything?” I told her I had thought about decorating badge reels in February after viewing a You Tube video. I had already ordered some supplies from overseas, but it took a while to receive them understandably because of Covid-19. She told me to give it try it because I was not happy at my job anymore. While, I’ve never been good at crafting, I was determined to give it a try. After I slowly started to receive my supplies and started ordering from eBay and Amazon to receive them quicker. I started decorating Id badge reels with pearls and rhinestones in June of 2020 and loved it. I would take apart old costume jewelry to accent the reel and was starting to get in a flow.
One day in July of 2020 while I was working on my badge reels, I received notification of my Aunt Linda in Jacksonville, Fl passing away in her sleep. I was in utter disbelief and wanted to throw my badge reels away and give up this goal too. She was a crafter and could do anything. I did not get a chance to tell her about my newfound talent. I was pleased with my talent, but she was gone and there was no way I could be happy again. I loved her beyond words. I grew up with her. She was my aunt but was only 6 years older than me. She was like a sister to me and my siblings. My heart ached. I cried for hours that day while my son Jared tried to console me. I talked to several relatives that day, but I did not tell anyone how I really felt. A part of me died that day along with her and my third goal almost died too. I finally pulled myself together later that evening and started decorating badge reels while having to keep drying my eyes and blowing my nose. I knew my Aunt Linda would be proud of me. After attending her funeral and finally recovering from Covid-19 that I unfortunately contracted after attending the funeral of my beloved aunt, I resumed my talent and started applying necessary paperwork to register my company and become my own boss. I would continue my job at the beauty supply store while working hard to become self-employed.
My intentions are to leave behind a legacy for my grandkids especially my three granddaughters. For now, I may have to do this solo and/or have few relatives or friends help with the possibility of future employment as my company grows. I will investigate assistance from Small Business Association and apply for grants/loans for financial assistance. As for now, I will work out of my home, sell at craft shows, flea markets, possibly at mall kiosk (if affordable). I have registered my company’s name with the Register of Deeds and obtained my business license, EIN and tax-exempt papers. My next step is to look into obtaining contracts with local Hospitals to possibly sell my badges in their gift shops and/or doctors’ offices. I will contact other companies whose employees wear ID Badges to possibly see if I can sell them on their premises.
My vision for the future is to employ young women from various backgrounds to work for my company. Too often young women of color must settle for less desired jobs. I want them to know they can have a choice to work somewhere where they can showcase their talents and have fun while doing so.
I am currently working on my website which will be appropriately named upgradeyourbadge.com. It’s amazing what a leap of faith, Covid-19 and a check for $1,200 can do.
I accept all blessings as what I reap, I shall also sow.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Estes, Owner
UPGRADE YOUR BADGE
The above was written in 2020 before I learned to make actual jewelry.
I started watching YouTube channels on jewelry making & fell in love. At 59 years old, I found my second calling. I absolutely love making and designing jewelry. This is my passion! My Hi2Lo Earrings discovery came by accident. I made a flat pearl necklace & wanted to make a pair of matching dangle earrings. The holes in the pearls were too small for the head pins I wanted to use so I decided to use the same jewelry wire that I had used for the necklace. I made the earrings and added a loop with pearls at the bottom of the dangle to dress it up. I was talking on the phone while playing with the earrings and placed the loop over the wire hook. The earring went from a dangle to a hoop without adding or removing anything.
I excitedly showed my sister & we jumped with joy because we both believed it was a new design. I worked to create more designs. After about two weeks of researching for a copyright and not finding one, I submitted my designs to obtain a copyright May 2, 2022 & received a copyright for two of my designs by the end of May. It feels wonderful to know that after I depart from this earth, my designs will remain.,
